Lately I have taken notice of several artists within the music industry trying to take music back to it's formative glory days; the years where the quality of one's voice was was complimented by the true emotion in their tone and the accompanying music behind them. Contemporary artists like Adele, Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande, Meghan Trainer, and Elle Varner all noticeably share similar female influences like Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Aretha Franklin.
Elle, a recent favorite of mine, boasts many of the qualities that great divas have; her voice is powerful, soulful and raspy, her lyrics are raw, honest and eloquent. She connects hip-hop to a stripped-down and more soulful base, one that is relatable and easy on the ears. Reminiscent of the great Ella Fitzgerald, I expect great things from Elle and her career.
Check out Elle Varner's "Fuck It All" and Ella Fitz Gerald's "Cry Me A River."
